Volunteering

Service to others is at the heart of Murray Hill Institute’s mission. To this end, Murray Hill Institute is in partnership with Rosedale Center, a division of thevolunteer1 South Bronx Educational Foundation. Rosedale provides one-on-one tutoring, leadership clubs, and summer academic and job training programs for girls from the South Bronx ages 9 to 18.   Murray Hill Institute provides Rosedale with professional women volunteers who share their knowledge and skills with Rosedale students.

Murray Hill Institute volunteers can collaborate with Rosedale Center in the following ways:

  • Be a guest speaker at Rosedale’s High School Club, which meets on Saturday afternoons during the academic year.  The club is part of the Career and University Prep program at Rosedale, which helps high school students evaluate career and college choices and develop the character traits, habits, and skills needed to succeed in school and in the workplace.
  • Share an interesting hobby, skill, or experience with the Saturday morning “Art of Living” club for girls in fourth through eighth grades.
  • Serve as an individual tutor on a weekday afternoon or on Saturday.
  • Accompany Rosedale students on a cultural or sports-related excursion.
  • Serve as a liaison between your workplace and Rosedale to set up summer internships for students enrolled in the summer Job Training Program. These internships are one month long and are supported by classes and individual mentoring by Rosedale staff. volunteer2

Getting Started

Women who are interested in volunteering at Rosedale should contact Alice Trimmer: atrimmer@sbef.org   to arrange for an interview with a Rosedale staff person. Rosedale provides orientation sessions for all volunteers.

Rosedale Center is located in the Parkchester area of the Bronx and is easily accessible by the number 6 train. Prospective volunteers are welcome to visit Rosedale to see the programs in action. Call Rosedale to arrange an appointment: 718-328-4090.
