Technological and Scientific Advancements: Their Implications for Women

The benefits of technology and science have been innumerable. We are now witnessing global communication at a pace previously unimaginable. New vistas have been opened for humanity; to name a few: an extended life span, increased educational and cultural opportunities, political and economic empowerment, the exploration of life beyond planet earth. Together with these advancements, however, new challenges confront us regarding the dignity of the human person and human rights. In this new millennium women have a unique role to play in the care of the human person and in the transformation of society so as to provide a more congenial setting for human flourishing. Papers might examine topics such as the new challenges posed by globalization, some of which include the balance of trade, the development of new marketplaces, the protection of human rights, especially of women and children; the impact of women in positions of influence; women, medicine, and health care; women and the political and economic structures; women as protectors of moral and aesthetic values.By January 15, 2005 please send an essay proposal of no more than two pages in length (double-spaced) to Alice Ramos at papers@murrayhillinstititute.org. Submissions should be made in Microsoft Word.

Authors will be notified of the committee's decision via e-mail by February 20, 2005.

Completed papers of 12 to 15 double-spaced pages will be due on April 20, 2005, and will later be posted on the Murray Hill Institute website.

A special invitation is extended to graduate students. A stipend of $250 will be awarded to the best paper submission by a graduate student. Students interested in competing for this stipend are requested to send their completed essays, not to exceed 12 double-spaced pages, by May 1, 2005 to Alice Ramos at papers@murrayhillinstitute.org.
