Murray Hill Institute Newsletter
Winter 2006
Volume 4, Number 1

Dear Friends,

There has been a good deal of activity at Murray Hill Institute over the
last few months. We are pleased that our programs and message are reaching a wider audience. Let me tell you briefly about some of the latest events.

Our latest conference, held on Saturday, April 22, A Person-Centered
Approach to Work-Life Balance
, was very well received. The speakers shared valuable knowledge and practical tips on the subject. They all concurred that the key to achieving balance is having one's priorities clear and allowing them to guide you when making work-family-life decisions. We continue in our efforts to promote a positive image of women in fashion and advertising. To this end, Murray Hill Institute sponsored an international fashion seminar in June with 30 women attending from Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and the United States. Although the seminar ran for just a few days, June 1-4, it seemed like a whole week with all that the women accomplished. The atmosphere was highly charged and language barriers—English, French, Italian and Spanish were all spoken—were miraculously overcome in the interchange of experiences. You can read more about the seminar in the feature article of this Newsletter. Also on the topic of fashion, I invite you to read our book/movie review of The Devil Wears Prada, also in this Newsletter.

We are very happy to welcome our new Executive Director, Alice Trimmer. Alice has been with Murray Hill Institute from its beginning in 2000 and has seen it grow over the years. Alice brings invaluable professional experience and creativity to the job. We are confident that under Alice's leadership we will be able to offer a greater number of quality programs. Alice outlines some of the current goals of the Institute in her message to readers, in the current Newsletter.

Although still in incipient form, Murray Hill Institute is developing a forum for women in the arts: writers, artists and musicians. In May we hosted a reading of The Rain at Truman's Funeral, a play written by Carol Ann Brammer. Those who attended enjoyed it very much and we hope to offer similar events in the future.

Early in November the third lecture in our Culture and Core Beliefs series was held with Prof. Dominic Balestra speaking on "Bridging the Divide between Science and Religion in the Public Square." A summary of the lecture appears in the "Recent and Upcoming Events" section of the Newsletter.

And on a lighter note, our Finance Committee hosted the annual dinner-dance benefit for Murray Hill Institute at the Hilton Hotel in Ft. Lee, NJ. Music, dancing and dining were the order of the evening and a good time was had by all. A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of our programs.

Kind regards,

Kathleen McGarry
President
